The NU-LASE Surgery Technique.

At Northern Laser Vision Centre we use the highly successful NU-LASE Epilift technique in our surgery.

Another technique still in use today, is Lasik. We no longer use this technique as we have found NU-LASE Epilift to give far superior results with better stability.

The NU-LASE Epilift technique is generally known as “The New Surface Ablation”, as it is performed on the superficial layers of the cornea. This technique does not cut the cornea, unlike Lasik, which is performed under a flap, which is cut and lifted back off the cornea.

Even though both procedures are approved by RANZCO (The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Opthamologists), NU-LASE Epilift has become the procedure of choice for a number of reasons:

  • We have been getting some very exciting results using NU-LASE Epilift .
  • NU-LASE Epilift gives excellent visual outcome.
  • NU-LASE Epilift has outstanding safety and predictability – 97% of our patients see as well or better after surgery without glasses, and greater than 35% have one or more lines of improvement of vision.
  • NU-LASE has less risk involved with the procedure itself compared with Lasik, which can have unpredictable and unforeseen potential flap and suction ring complications. There is no weakening of the cornea with NU-LASE because the cornea is not cut, unlike Lasik by Keratome (metal knife blade) or by Intralase (laser knife) . This results in long term cornea stability.
  • NU-LASE Epilift is approved for most branches of the Australian Defence Force as well as US Defence Forces, where as Lasik is not.
  • Customised ablations appear to work much better using NU-LASE than Lasik.
  • NU-LASE has significantly less dry eye problems with faster recovery than Lasik.

The visual recovery period of NU-LASE takes a little longer than Lasik, but NU-LASE has a better long-term results for people with a script of 0.0 to –9.50D. For people with Hyperopia and +ve hyperopic astigmatism, NU-LASE has a better long term results due to less regression occurring with NU-LASE with most modern laser technology.

The emergence of WASCA. (Wavefront Aberration Simulated Customized Ablation) has meant NU-LASE (Advanced Surface Ablation) has proven to be the superior platform for the use of this groundbreaking technology.

* NU-LASE is a registered Trade Mark of Northern Laser Vision Centre

Bioptics

As well as being at the forefront of cutting edge Refractive Surgery techniques, the Northern Laser Vision Centre offers a wide range of other ophthalmological services.

As a very experienced Cataract surgeon, Dr Frumar applies the same refractive principles to plan for optimised outcomes. An exciting advance in this field is the introduction of BIOPTICS.

This concept marries the fields of Laser Vision Correction and Cataract extraction. Cataract surgery results have improved enormously in the last decade. For many people glasses are not required for day to day life after cataract surgery. There are however variations which occur with the healing of the cornea and lens capsule after Cataract surgery, which can make people dependent on spectacles. Now we are able correct these using Bioptics to give spectacle free vision.

Bioptics incorporates the Excimer Laser to eliminate residual refractive error after Cataract removal. This totally eliminates the need for any distance spectacles.
